Our History

The History of Forest Lake Academy

Founded in 1918, Forest Lake Academy began as the Lake Winyah School, the first Seventh-day Adventist academy established by the Florida Conference of Seventh-day Adventists in Central Florida. The original campus was located near what is now AdventHealth University in Orlando. School leaders envisioned a Christ-centered school that would prepare young people academically, spiritually, and practically for lives of service and leadership. 

As enrollment grew, the school relocated in 1926 to its present campus near Forest Lake and was renamed Forest Lake Academy. Early classes on the new property were held in a farmhouse while the campus was being developed. 

Over the decades, FLA expanded into a respected college-preparatory Christian high school serving students from across Florida, the United States, and around the world. The campus grew to include academic buildings, athletic facilities, fine arts spaces, dormitories, and student life programs designed to support the development of the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. 

Today, Forest Lake Academy continues its mission of educating students through faith-based academics, leadership opportunities, athletics, fine arts, and service. With thousands of alumni around the world, FLA remains committed to preparing students for college, career, and a life of Christian purpose.
